Terms of Service
These terms govern your use of Umbra. Umbra is an experimental alpha: it is provided as-is, we charge nothing and pay out nothing yet, and it may change or break. By using Umbra you agree to these terms. If you do not agree, do not use the service.
1. Eligibility
You must be at least 18 years old to use Umbra. By using it you confirm you are 18+ and able to enter into this agreement.
2. Experimental alpha — no payments, no guarantees
- Umbra is in active testing. We do not currently charge for usage and do not make provider payouts.
- Any free credit shown in your account is promotional, has no cash value, and is not redeemable or withdrawable.
- The service may be changed, interrupted, rate-limited, reset, or discontinued at any time, without notice or liability.
- If and when paid usage or payouts are introduced, separate terms will apply and you will be notified.
3. Your account
Provide accurate information and keep your credentials and API keys secure. You are responsible for all activity under your account and keys. Notify us promptly of any unauthorized use. Do not share API keys.
4. What Umbra does — and your responsibility
Umbra routes your inference requests to independent provider machines running public, open-weight models. We are a neutral conduit: as described in our Privacy Policy, we do not see, log, or store your prompts or the model's outputs. Because of that, you are solely responsible for the prompts you submit and how you use the outputs, including their accuracy, legality, and any consequences.
5. Acceptable use
Umbra is content-neutral, and many of the models on the network are uncensored or unfiltered. You may use them for lawfulpurposes, including legitimate uses that mainstream providers decline to serve. You may not use Umbra to:
- create, solicit, or distribute child sexual abuse material or anything that sexually exploits or endangers minors;
- engage in or facilitate anything illegal under applicable law — including credible threats or incitement of violence, fraud, harassment, creation of malware, or unauthorized access to systems;
- infringe others' intellectual-property, privacy, or other rights;
- attack, overload, probe, de-anonymize, or attempt to reverse-engineer or defeat the security or attestation of the network, its providers, or other users;
- circumvent metering, rate limits, or access controls, or resell access without our written permission.
You are solely responsible for complying with the laws that apply to you and your use. Because we do not log prompts, enforcement relies on you acting in good faith; we may suspend or terminate accounts we reasonably believe violate these terms or the law.
6. Providers
If you operate a provider machine on the network:
- You select, approve, and host public Hugging Face models using your own Hugging Face credentials, and you are responsible for complying with each model's license and the laws that apply to you.
- You run our attested provider client and are responsible for your machine and its security.
- During the alpha there are no payouts; provider earnings, if introduced later, will be governed by separate terms.
7. Intellectual property
Umbra and its software, name, and marks are owned by us. You retain all rights to your prompts and outputs (which we do not access). You grant us only the limited rights needed to operate the service — chiefly to route your request and record content-free usage counts.
8. Disclaimers
Umbra is provided "as is" and "as available," without warranties of any kind, express or implied, including merchantability, fitness for a particular purpose, availability, accuracy, or non-infringement. Model outputs may be wrong, biased, or offensive. You use Umbra at your own risk.
9. Limitation of liability
To the maximum extent permitted by law, Umbra and its operators will not be liable for any indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages, or for lost profits or data, arising from your use of the service. Our total liability is limited to the amount you paid us in the prior twelve months — which, during the free alpha, is zero.
10. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless Umbra and its operators from claims arising out of your use of the service or your violation of these terms or applicable law.
11. Termination
You may stop using Umbra at any time. We may suspend or terminate access at any time, including for suspected violations of these terms.
12. Governing law
These terms are governed by the laws of [governing jurisdiction — to be set], without regard to conflict-of-laws rules. Disputes will be resolved in the courts of that jurisdiction.
13. Changes to these terms
We may update these terms as the service evolves. The "Last updated" date reflects the latest version; continued use after a change means you accept the updated terms.
